Farmer Angus’ pork is from his farm on the biodynamic Spier estate. For more on his biodynamic and ethical farming techniques with pigs – please see the video within each product item. The animals are fed the only non GM pig feed in the country. They are also heavy foragers and do a huge service to the land in this process, completely regenerating it. Biodynamic and regenerative agricultural principles and practices are applied in the raising all of the farm’s animals which includes cattle, pigs, broiler chickens and laying hens, as well as vegetables and wine. Situated on 126 hectares of irrigated pasture, the cattle are moved 4 times per day. The broilers and layers every day and the pigs once they have completely trashed an area which takes about 5 days. This ensures that the farm is neither overgrazed or overfertilised. Whether the conventional farming operation is caged or so called “free range” the housing is fixed and so the animals are under constant disease pressure as they live with their manure.

All other pork is from Oak Valley farm. Please note that this pork is from pigs that are fed GMs and supplemented during season with acorns and forage on this estate. They are free range for most of their lives, except for a time when the mothers are feeding their children, in which time they are kept in sow crates, which prevents them from moving. They do this to protect the piglets from being squashed, which is a reality because of the way that pigs are now bred. For these reasons, I have replaced as much of the pork offering that I can with Farmer Angus.
